Why are they Required?

Fire extinguishers are one of the first lines of defence in any fire emergency—but they’re only useful if they’re in good working order. Over time, extinguishers can lose pressure, become damaged, or simply degrade through environmental exposure and general wear and tear. That’s why annual servicing isn’t optional—it’s a legal requirement.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, employers, landlords, and duty holders have a legal obligation to ensure that fire safety equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in working order, and in good repair. This includes having your extinguishers inspected and serviced at least once every 12 months by a competent person, in accordance with BS 5306-3.

How do we do them?

At SJH Safety Solutions, our annual fire extinguisher servicing is carried out by fully qualified technicians who follow the latest BS 5306-3 standards and Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 guidance. We make the process straightforward, professional, and fully compliant—without disrupting your day-to-day operations.

We begin with a full visual inspection of each extinguisher to check for signs of corrosion, leakage, tampering, or damage. Next, we verify that each unit is in the correct location, mounted properly, and appropriate for the fire risks in that area.

Our technicians then:

  • Check pressure gauge readings and internal pressure (where applicable)

  • Ensure safety pins and tamper seals are intact

  • Inspect hoses, nozzles, and discharge mechanisms

  • Clean and service each extinguisher as needed

  • Replace any missing or worn components (tags, seals, etc.)

  • Record all results in a digital log and apply clear, dated service labels

We’ll also advise you if any extinguishers are due for extended servicing (e.g., 5- or 10-year intervals), or if a replacement is recommended due to age or condition.

Once complete, you’ll receive a full service report and compliance certificate for your records—ideal for audits, insurance, and fire risk assessments.
